70th Birthday Gift Ideas: Seventy Years Worth Keeping

A cream family word art collage beside a dark Birthday Collage with words such as Family, Home and Love Lives Here

By seventy, most people have the things they need, and many are giving things away rather than collecting more. What they rarely have is a single place where the whole of their life can be seen at once: the wedding photo, the first house, the children small, the grandchildren now. A good 70th birthday gift brings that together, and the best ones are made with them as much as for them.

This guide covers what makes a 70th birthday gift right, the ideas worth considering (honestly, including the ones that are not ours), and how to find seventy years of photos when half of them are slides in a loft.

What makes a 70th birthday gift right

It is about them, not about the number

Jokes about age wear thin at seventy. The gifts that land are the ones that say what their life has meant to the people around them, not how long it has lasted.

It does not add clutter

Many people in their seventies are downsizing, or thinking about it. One piece that holds a hundred memories is welcome in a way that another ornament is not. It can also replace a stack of albums nobody has opened for years.

It can be seen from across the room

Choose fewer, bigger photos over lots of tiny ones, and keep the words large enough to read without glasses. A gift that has to be studied up close gets looked at less.

70th birthday gift ideas, honestly assessed

1. Seventy years in one piece

A photo collage of their life, from the earliest black and white photos to last summer. A Birthday Collage arranges the photos into the shape of the number itself, so the 70 is made from their own life. A word art collage puts the photos in the middle and surrounds them with the words that belong to them.

2. An afternoon with the old albums

Sit down with them and go through the albums and the shoebox together, and ask who everyone is. It costs nothing, it is often the part they enjoy most, and it is the best way to find the photos and stories for anything else you make. Take your phone and photograph the prints as you go.

3. A trip back to somewhere that mattered

The town where they grew up, the seaside resort of their childhood holidays, the place they went on honeymoon. A day there with family can mean more than anything wrapped. Bring a camera, because the photos from that day often become favourites.

4. A proper family photograph

If the whole family will be together for the birthday, book a photographer for an hour, or at least make sure someone takes a good group photo. At seventy, a photo with every generation in it is precious, and surprisingly few families have a recent one.

5. Their recipes or handwriting, kept

A small book of the family recipes in their own handwriting, scanned and printed. It is a gift for them and for everyone who comes after them.

6. The slides and cine film, finally digitised

Many people of this generation have boxes of slides, negatives or cine film they have not seen for decades. Sending them to a scanning service is a practical gift with a real emotional payoff, and those scans can then become part of a collage.

7. Something for the garden

A rose, a fruit tree or a climbing plant, chosen for the year or for a name in the family. It grows and comes back every year, which suits a milestone birthday well.

How to find seventy years of photos

Start with the oldest relatives

Brothers, sisters, cousins and old friends often hold the photos the family has lost: school photos, the early working years, holidays before the children came along. Ask them first, because their photos take longest to arrive.

Slides, negatives and prints

Prints can be photographed flat in daylight with the flash off. Slides and negatives need scanning: a scanning service, a library scanner or an inexpensive slide scanner all work. Photos can be cropped in the designer, so borders, mounts and table edges do not matter.

Write down who is in each photo

While you are gathering, make a note of who is in each photo and roughly when it was taken. It helps you choose, and the notes are worth keeping long after the birthday.

Choose by the story, not by the decade

You do not need ten photos from every decade. Some years are full of photos and some have none. Choose the photos that tell their story best, and let the gaps be gaps.

How many photos?

A Birthday Collage needs at least 30 photos to build the number. An A2 print holds up to 35 photos, an A1 up to 60 and an A0 up to 100. For older eyes, fewer and bigger photos are often the better choice.

What size and format

For a 70th, an A1 or A0 framed print makes a centrepiece for a living room or hallway, and it can sit on an easel at the party before it goes on the wall. A poster hanger is lighter and simpler to hang if wall space or fixings are a worry. Both come in portrait or landscape, and not every size is available in every country. Our guide to photo collage prints compares the formats.

Surprise, or made together?

Both work. A surprise is lovely at the party, but it means guessing who is in the old photos and which ones they like. Making it together takes away the surprise and adds an afternoon of stories, and many people at seventy enjoy that more. A middle way is to gather the photos with them for "a project" and keep the finished piece a secret until the day.

Frequently asked questions

What do you buy someone for their 70th who does not want more things?

Something that replaces clutter rather than adding to it, such as one collage that holds the photos from a dozen albums, or an experience with the family. Time spent with them, going through their photos, is also a gift in itself.

How many photos do I need for a 70th birthday collage?

A Birthday Collage needs at least 30. A word art collage can look full with a dozen, and an A0 print holds up to 100.

Can I use old slides and negatives?

Yes, once they are scanned. Old black and white photos sit well next to colour ones, and the whole collage can also be shown in black and white if you prefer.

Can I add "70" and their name?

Yes. A Birthday Collage makes the 70 out of photos, and you choose every word yourself, so their name, the places they have lived and the things they always say can all go in.

How far ahead should I start?

Give yourself a few weeks to gather photos, especially if relatives need to post old prints or slides need scanning. Designing takes an evening once the photos are together. Delivery times are on our shipping page.
