Personalised Wedding Gift Ideas: Their Story So Far

Most couples have a gift list, and most guests use it. But almost everyone also wants to give something that feels personal: a present that is about the two of them rather than about their kitchen. Done well, a personalised wedding gift is the one still on display years after the toaster has been replaced.

Here is how to choose one, when to give it, and how to gather the photos without giving the game away.

What makes a good wedding gift

It respects what the couple asked for

If there is a gift list or a honeymoon fund, that is what the couple would most like. A personal gift works best alongside it, or from a close friend or family member who knows them well enough to get it right.

It is about the two of them

The best personalised wedding gifts tell the couple's story: how they met, where they have been, the people and places that matter to them. Names and a date are a start; the details are what make it theirs.

It suits their home

A wedding gift will live somewhere for years. Something that fits the way they live will be kept on the wall. Something that does not will be kept in a cupboard.

Wedding gift ideas, honestly assessed

1. Their story so far, in photos and words

Gather photos from their time together, from the early days to the engagement, and surround them with the words that belong to their story: where they met, the first date, the city they moved to, the name of the dog, the date of the wedding.

A word art collage is made for this. The photos sit together in the middle and your words fill the space around them in different sizes and directions. You design it yourself, so every word is one you chose.

If you would rather not use words at all, the designer can also fill the background with a repeating pattern made from their initials.

2. The wedding day itself, afterwards

Wait until after the wedding and collect the best photos from the guests' phones: the ones the official photographer never takes, like the speeches from the back of the room and the dance floor at midnight. A collage of the day from the guests' point of view makes a lovely gift a few weeks later, or for their first anniversary, which is traditionally paper.

3. Something from the gift list

Honestly, if the couple has a list, it is the safest choice and often the most useful. There is nothing impersonal about giving people what they have asked for.

4. A contribution to the honeymoon

Many couples now ask for this instead of things. Some honeymoon funds let you pay for a particular experience, which you can mention in the card.

5. Something for the home they are building

Good bedding, a piece of furniture, a plant that will outlive the toaster. Practical gifts are welcome, as long as they suit the couple's taste rather than yours.

6. A letter in the card

Whatever else you give, a few handwritten lines about why you are glad they found each other will be read more than once.

Before or after the wedding?

Do not bring a large gift to the venue

Couples rarely want to transport a framed piece home at the end of the night. Send it to their home instead, before or after the day, and bring a card to the wedding itself.

A gift after the wedding is perfectly normal

There is no strict deadline. Many guests send their gift in the weeks after, and a collage of the wedding day itself can only be made afterwards anyway.

Think about the honeymoon

If they are going away straight after the wedding, time the delivery for when they are back, so it is not left on a doorstep.

How to gather their photos without spoiling the surprise

Ask the people closest to them

The best man, the maid of honour, siblings and parents will have the photos you need, and they can usually be trusted to keep quiet. Ask each of them for five or six.

Ask for originals, not screenshots

Photos saved from social media or forwarded several times lose detail. Ask for the original from the camera roll, or a shared album link, which keeps the full quality.

For a wedding-day collage, set up a shared album

After the wedding, a shared album that guests can add to collects dozens of photos in a day or two. Choose the best and leave the blurry ones out.

What size and format

An A2 print is a lovely size for a couple's story with twenty or thirty photos. For a wedding-day collage with photos from lots of guests, an A1 holds up to 60 photos on paper. Canvas sizes hold slightly fewer, and not every size is available in every country.

It can be made as a framed print, a canvas, a framed canvas or a poster hanger. Our guide to photo collage prints explains how they compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is it all right to give a gift that is not on the wedding list?

Yes, especially if you know the couple well. Many guests give something from the list and add a smaller personal gift, or give a personal gift on its own when they are close family or friends.

What should a personalised wedding gift include?

Their names and the date are the usual starting points. The details make it special: where they met, places they have lived or travelled, and the words and in-jokes that belong to them.

Can a group of guests give one together?

Yes. Friends from one part of the couple's life, such as university or work, often give a joint gift. One person designs it and everyone contributes photos and words.

How soon after the wedding should I give a gift?

There is no fixed rule. Within a few months is common, and a collage of the wedding day itself also makes a good first anniversary gift.

How long does it take to arrive?

Each piece is made to order, so allow time for delivery after you have designed it. Our delivery page lists the working days for your country.

Where to start

Message the best man, the maid of honour or a sibling today and ask for a handful of photos of the couple. When they come in, start creating the collage here. Designing is free, you can change it as often as you like, and you only pay if you decide to print it.
